Happy New Year!

If 2017 was the year of upheaval and chaos, I am looking forward to 2018 being the year of political unity.

Notwithstanding the daily chaos in the news, 2017 also saw a record number of people coming together to march for women’s rights, the rights of African-Americans, our firm belief in science, protecting our climate, and more.

Here in Houston, 2017 saw people coming together to help our neighbors impacted by hurricane Harvey.

My hope for 2018, is that We the People continue to come together and fulfill the dreams of our Nation’s founders to make this land, and our democracy, one where Equal Protection under the law is a reality, not a goal.

Until last week, the great seal of the United States always had the Latin phrase: e pluribus unum.

This translates to out of many, one.

Our country has always been great because out of many states, out of many immigrants, out of many races, out of many diverse people, we have built one strong Nation.
Of course, 2018 will have its challenges.

It is my hope that we will not fight each other, but stand up for each other.

May we all be blessed with the courage to stand up to injustice.

And the courage to demand the truth from our leaders.

May God bless you, and may you and your family welcome 2018 with hope for our future and for America’s future.
